Drilling for natural resources is a little bit like reporting: you want to reach the valuable substance of your data as fast and efficiently as possible. With the drilldown feature in the upcoming version 15 of List & Label you can now get to the core of your data even better. And this means not only savings in time for you but also in money.
A great advantage
of drilldown reporting is, that it can clean up your design noticeably. Until now, a report had to reach every possible ramification of the relational structure in order to meet every information need of the customer. For example if you wanted to get an overview of persons, documents and projects, you could either export every information at once or produce many separate reports for every item. Now you can bundle everything into a drilldown report from which everybody can "drill" the information he/she requires.
The drilldown feature makes your reporting easier and clearer. Instead of producing unnecessary piles of reports you can now find your information with a few clicks. This makes reporting what it was meant to be: No looking for a needle in a haystack but the successful and easy evaluation of relevant data.
... And This Is How It's Done:
Drilldown reporting is always handy if you want to report relational structures and need the possibility to focus on certain areas. In the upcoming version 15 of List & Label, drilldown reporting can apply either to single fields or whole table rows depending on your requirements. You get your drilldown report in two easy steps:
1. To build drilldown links the relations between the tables, familiar from the report container, are available. Multiple links can be created, the user then just selects which link will be triggered.
2. Users can choose the display mode of their drilldown result depending on personal preferences. The new report will either open in the same window, in a separate window or like in a browser in a separate tab.
Background Information
While developing the drilldown feature,
the databinding for .NET has been significantly expanded for the upcoming version 15 of List & Label. Now the component can directly access a multitude of data sources and automatically provide Drilldown support. For example: SQL, Oracle, OleDb, XML and LINQ.

00s ...
List & Label has always been a state-of the-art reporting tool. We want to continue setting standards, so we have constantly added new features over the last years. So far we have made great progress and can now look back at a whole evolution history. Since version 11 we have developed a convenient way to print relational structures. Afterwards we tackled support for crosstabs, created an entirely programmable object model and we included a real data preview into the designer.

Drilldown support was one of the last blank areas which we can now cover. However, designing the navigation through the reports as easy as possible like in a browser, turned out to be a little challenge. In order to achieve this goal we expanded the preview control considerably. We also wanted to keep the support through the application as straightforward as possible and we believe that was best achieved by many data providers for .NET.

Including drilldown reporting into List & Label has made a long held wish come true, also from my personal point of view. This way the component remains true to itself as a groundbreaking reporting tool with cutting-edge features to simplify reporting extremely. On our stand at this years CeBIT in Hannover (Germany) I could already see that drilldown reporting is a feature that's just fun to use! It clears things up at lightning speed and makes sure that valuable information doesn't end up as graveyard data but can be evaluated quickly and efficiently. ... 60s
