License Agreement

Which licensing terms apply?

By default the combit License Agreement. Based on this agreement the List & Label pricing has been calculated. Some points that are excluded are not generally impossible but may only need to be agreed upon individually. Please contact us before you start the corresponding project.

Where do I find the combit License Agreement?

  • At /en/licenseagreement.aspx.
  • Within the product itself. When installing the software you are explicitly prompted to read and agree to the terms of the combit License Agreement.
  • In the product's box, if you purchased List & Label on CD.

Standard, Professional and Enterprise Edition

What are the main differences between the Standard, Professional, and Enterprise Edition?

The Standard Edition is the most economical version, as neither a subscription nor support is included, in comparison to the other two editions. Professional and Enterprise Edition also include the DOM model. And while the Standard and Professional Edition runtime license is only compatible with most desktop applications, the Enterprise Edition is compatible with Server/Web server applications without any server or user limitations.
More detailed information on the three editions.

Is it possible to upgrade from the Standard version to the Professional or from the Professional to the Enterprise Edition?

Yes. You can purchase an upgrade within the current version at any time. We offer attractive supplementary models.

Can our project group use one Enterprise or a Professional and several Standard Editions?

No. The whole project group must decide which edition they want: Standard, Professional or Enterprise.

Number of licenses and license application

What does the List & Label license include?

The following applies for each of the three editions, Standard, Professional and Enterprise: List & Label is a personal, developer license, non-transferable without authorization from combit, for one developer for installation on one PC. If a company - one juristic person - buys a license, one person within the organization is entitled to use the List & Label license. That means: Each List & Label license may only be used by one registered developer on one computer. A small exception is made in the Professional and Enterprise Edition, as they both allow the same developer to alternatively use the List & Label license on a notebook. I.e. you can either work at a desktop computer or on a notebook with List & Label - but always either/or and never at the same time. Network operations are only permitted if it is possible to ensure by technical means that only the registered user can access the license. Every theoretically possible access must be licensed.

How many licenses do I need?

You need a license for every developer who is involved in the overall project and/or the overall product in which List & Label is integrated. In this connection it is completely irrelevant whether a developer uses List & Label functions or not. That's why we offer attractive volume discounts for developer teams.

Example: If you and your colleagues develop an ERP and integrate List & Label, all developers working on that ERP need their own, personal List & Label developer license. This also applies for your colleague who is only taking care e.g. of the rights or the data import of the ERP.

Can more than one developer use List & Label as long as it is not at the same time?

No. If you share a PC with another developer, each one of you needs a license. If two developers work on two PC, one on even the other on uneven weekdays, they both need a license. We offer attractive team licenses.

Am I permitted to install my List & Label license on my notebook as well as on my desktop computer and use both computers alternately?

Yes, if you use the Professional or Enterprise Edition and no, if you use the Standard Edition. With the Standard Edition, each end device requires a separate license. We have very attractive multiple licenses.

Can I use my List & Label license in a network?

Yes, as long as you ensure by technical means that only you as the registered user can access the license. If you want List & Label to be used by other developers you need to purchase as many licenses as there are developers who want to use it, or persons who can access the List & Label files and/or the source code. As a license safeguard each List & Label which is in use for developing within a network will send an internal message to the other stations. You will receive disturbing warnings if you share the same license in a network. A warning shows that a severe offense against the combit License Agreement has already taken place.

How do I avoid warnings?

You will receive warnings if you share one List & Label license in a network. This is a severe offence against the combit License Agreement. If you receive warnings the license has been used for developing more than once. To avoid warnings, purchase and install a List & Label license for each developer.

Do I need a license for each developer working on a software project or product?

Yes. Each developer working on the overall project or product needs a license, no matter whether List & Label functions are used or whether the developer is working on the relevant List & Label source code or not. Our basic conditions are fair, but the calculation contains that a developer team is equipped with the necessary number of licenses. One license is not enough for a major project. We offer attractive team licenses.

Example: If you and your colleagues develop an ERP and integrate List & Label, all developers working on that ERP need their own, personal List & Label developer license. This also applies for your colleague who is only taking care e.g. of the rights or the data import of the ERP.

We are 10 developers in our product development team. I am the only one working on the print logic. How many licenses do we need?

You need 10 licenses. Although you are the only one who is integrating the print logic with the help of List & Label, each developer who participates in the overall project or product needs a license. We offer attractive team licenses.

We would like to realize the printing functions of our application in form of a separate module and offer it optionally. Am I right that in this case a single license is sufficient if I am the only person working on that optional module?

No, not on the basis of the standard combit License Agreement. Bypassing § 2.19 by modularization is no option because a printing module is not permitted within the scope of the standard combit License Agreement. If you are planning to develop a printing module for other purposes, please contact combit to check the possibility of an individual agreement before you start developing.

Can I encapsulate List & Label functionalities and provide other developers with it?

No, not on the basis of the standard combit License Agreement. If you are planning to encapsulate List & Label functionalities, you will need the corresponding number of licenses. Additionally, an addendum to the combit License Agreement is required. Please contact combit before you start developing with List & Label.

We develop an application that will be marketed by another company. Who needs a license?

You as a developer and all participating developers (see above) need a license. If the vendor receives the source code of the application or if the product is being published under his name and ownership, the vendor needs at least one license. In principle each person with theoretical access to the source code or to the List & Label files that are not to be redistributed needs a license.

What is special about an upgrade license?

It is economical and the previous version automatically loses its validity after an upgrade installation. This means that the old version can no longer be used in new applications and may not access them as soon as an upgrade has been installed. In some projects it is necessary to use the old license at the same time, e.g. in order to continue maintenance of programs. In this event, you should not purchase an upgrade but rather another new license.

Can I pass on the List & Label Designer without having to pay additional license fees?

Yes, as long as you abide by the license agreement, especially considering the following conditions:

  • You are marketing or distributing the List & Label runtime module only in combination and as part of your software program.
  • If you are using the Standard or Professional Edition, your software program can be a desktop application but not a Server/Web server application. In the case of the Enterprise Edition, you are also able to integrate Server/Web server applications without paying additional license fees.
  • Your application or program module is not primarily involved in the printing area and your purpose is not initially to create and distribute reports, as it is, for example, in label and reporting programs.
  • In marketing your software product you are not able to use name, logo, trademark or other distinguishing characteristics belonging to combit.
  • Your application and related material is equipped with the necessary copyright notations.
  • Support for your program incl. List & Label functionality shall be carried out by you.
  • You may not allow your customers to distribute the List & Label runtime module to other parties.
  • You agree to indemnify and hold combit harmless from all possible claims made by your end customers.

What is a language kit?

Apart from English the List & Label Designer is also available in other national languages, switchable at runtime. Each additional language you equip your application with is called a language kit. As with List & Label we offer twelve language kits, among which are world languages as Spanish, but also less common ones as Danish and Czech. Language kits depend on the respective version. That means that a language kit for List & Label version 16 can not be used with version 17.

How many language kits do I need?

You need a language kit for every List & Label developer license in every language you want your application to support. We offer attractive volume discounts.

When do I have to purchase a Server/Web server license?

If you integrate List & Label into a Server/Web server application and use the Standard or Professional Edition rather than the Enterprise Edition. In this event for each installation of this application you need a List & Label Server/Web server license at the appropriate size. Your application is subsequently a Server/Web server application, if, for example, it uses Internet protocols, a Web server extension, is integrated in ASP or PHP pages or is a stand-alone Server application. A "Server application" is an application or a service that can be started on a computer or used by another computer and is therefore able to "maintain" and execute requests from other computers. You can find more information in § 2.5.9 of the combit software license agreement. The Enterprise Edition also includes a Server/Web server license and is unlimited with regard to the number of servers and end users.

What do I have to equip my application with, when List & Label is integrated?

You have to include the complete copyright notice at least at one position within your application where usually copyright notices are located. In principle the List & Label copyright notice has to be found wherever your own or third party copyright notices appear. This is not reduced to the program itself but includes packaging, information material like brochures, online media etc. Additionally the copyright notice has to be part of the "about dialog" of your application. Please learn more in the corresponding info file within your List & Label license.

Can I use List & Label to build a software development tool?

No, not on the basis of the standard combit License Agreement. This does not mean that this is generally impossible. If you are planning to build such a product by using List & Label, please contact combit to check the possibility of an individual agreement before you start developing.

Can I use List & Label to build a purely reporting or label tool/module?

No, not on the basis of the standard combit License Agreement. This does not mean that this is generally impossible. If you are planning to build such a product by using List & Label, please contact combit to check the possibility of an individual agreement before you start developing. If you have purchased server / web server licenses as part of the Enterprise Edition (List & Label 13 or higher) or if you have purchased server / web server licenses additionally (Standard or Professional Edition of List & Label 13 or higher, and List & Label 12 or older) you may develop a server / web server print module, provided that it is only a module within you product. Even when using server / web server licenses you are not allowed to develop a separate or stand alone product as stated in § 3.3 of the combit Standard License Agreement.

Serial Number and Registration

Why do I need to register my List & Label version with combit?

  • So that you have access to all the current service packs for the Standard Edition for one year and benefit from favorable update conditions.
  • So that you have access to the current service packs for the Professional or Enterprise Edition and benefit from support services within the framework of your subscription.

How and where do I register my List & Label license?

We recommend that you register right away when installing your List & Label license, online, directly with combit. You find a link within the setup. You can also use the online registration at any time.

Who registers a List & Label license?

The developer. Only registered users have access to the support and service packs. We therefore strongly recommend not to register a CEO or a company in general. Communication processes would slow down and get more complicated because the developer would have no direct support access. For the safety of our corporate customers it is generally not possible for a developer to transfer a license to someone outside the corporation, for example to himself/herself after he/she has left the company or is planning to do so. License transfers are accepted when taking place within the same organization. Registering does not change the license's ownership which will remain with the company.

Where do I find the serial number of my List & Label license?

  • On the license certificate. If you purchased List & Label on CD you find the license certificate in the product's box. If you directly downloaded List & Label from the online shop you can print out the license certificate directly there.
  • Within your List & Label license. Start the sample application on the PC you are developing on and open the Designer. Press [Ctrl] + [Shift] + [F12]. The following dialog displays your serial number.

Can I transfer my List & Label license to someone else?

In general, yes. License transfers are excepted when taking place within the same organization. Filling out the respective form will transfer the registration after a short check by combit. By transferring a license you as the previous developer confirm that you reinstalled List & Label from your PC before the future developer has started to work on the List & Label project. For the safety of our corporate customers it is generally not possible for a developer to transfer a license to someone outside the corporation, for example to himself/herself after he/she has left the company or is planning to do so. License transfers are accepted when taking place within the same organization.

How do I transfer my List & Label license to a colleague and what is the price?

Please contact the combit sales & service team either by phone or eMail. They will inform you about the procedure and arrange it for you free of charge.
